It's the one feature the Xpression has over my table. (all the other options can be added down the track)
I'm always there anyway, I find listening to a vinyl forces me to listen to the music as I have to interact more.

It's probably my favourite thing about vinyl.

I didn't think the Xpression has tone arm return, does it?
Only the Comfort edition does, but that's $400 more. It does have electronic switching between rpm too, which includes 33, 45 and 78, but it's not worth the price tag.

The point of my previous question is that if you are not around when the vinyl ends, what happens?

Mine keeps going, but I've never let it go for more than 30 seconds or so.

The xpression that I saw in store had the automatic shut-off, so the needle jumps up but doesn't return.

Yes they simply raise the arm. What store was this?
Also I have found the prices to vary quite a bit from website to website. I want a straight answer on how much a good set-up will cost me.
Brad, do you use an external Phono Box as a pre-amp?

Also Tom, if you read this - you know that 'KLAPP' shop we always walk past in Melbourne, they're a stockist of these Pro-Ject turntables that im looking at. Just thought that was cool because ive never thought about entering that place. They always seem to be closed.

by the way, it's good to have someone to talk about this stuff. Don't forget about this thread Brad.

The place was in North Sydney but it's closed or moved.

I have a setup straight to my system, but I really wish I had a pre-amp as I don't get the best sound out of my current system.

Yeah id probably go with a pre-amp. Pro-ject have quite a few, and of course they vary a lot in price but don't mention how they are different.

Brad, im going to order this all tomorrow.

I have one question, and a quick answer would be appreciated.
Can I plug speakers into a pre-amp?

Im looking at buying the Xpression III, a valve phono box, and then a Pro-Ject preamp. I will get a speaker set and an amp later down the track.
So, when I get my turntable, phono box and preamp, will I be able to take that home and plug them into my current speakers?

Can a preamp work without an amp?

Sorry mate, don't have a pre-amp.

My thoughts were that you couldn't, that it only gave a greater clarity between the amp and the player.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

I picked up my order today and right now im nearing the end of setting it all up, BUT I am short one fucking cord!!! I need a cable that has the red and white phono plugs on both ends of the cable. Where can I find one of these around the house?

I can't listen to the turntable without this cable. This cable connects the phono box to the speakers. I can't connect the turntable directly to the speakers because it does not have a built in phono preamp.

FUCK THIS IS PISSING ME OFF! ONE FUCKING CABLE!

REVIVED!

Brad, I ordered Pro-Ject's Speed Box II yesterday. $200 including freight. Not only does it allow automatic speed change (I was getting annoyed with removing the platter. I rarely played 45's because of it), the Speed Box apparently increases sound quality immensely. It has received amazing reviews. Apparently it's the single best upgrade you can do to your system for under $500.

Also bought the Pro-Ject Record Puck. Hope it does something. Meant to reduce vibration and help warped records play.

check out EITS' new vinyl. Without a doubt the best packaging I have ever seen.

http://explosionsinthesky.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=10280_42355&pc=XPLP05
(click on alternate views)

"It's packaged in the most outrageously deluxe artwork we've dared since the Eluvium box set. Housed (literally, it's a house) in a 10-panel quadruple gatefold cardboard jacket, with an enormous 18-panel full-color double-sided poster, and a full-color double-sided postcard - then all of that is tucked neatly inside of a full-color double-sided slipcase! Trust us, it's bananas."

I bought a $12 record player on the weekend, discuss.

Also, what's a good price for a run of the mill pink floyd, black sabbath etc LP?

for new LP's (reissues etc) $30 is the going rate.
Original presses, of bands like those, can be a lot more.

Aim for your twice yearly record fairs, Paramatta has one as does much of inner Sydney (Glebe, Newtown etc)
I picked up my old copies of Black Sabbath, The Wall, Dark side.. and Led Zep I through IV for about 10 each.

Obviously they weren't original pressings (if you're even in to that sort of thing)

Actually I also managed to picked up Mezzanine for $2.50!
